Hmmm this is a sad little post to write. Remember my friend Irene who was having a shit time at school? Last Thursday after school as we were walking to our cars to head home, she told me she has just been to see the principal to tell him she was resigning. !?!?!?!?! Turns out, the night before her friend had offered her a job teaching at some international business college in the city. More in line with what she was used to (teaching international kids, teaching marketing) but it meant she wouldn't be getting her teacher registration because it wasn't a govt. high school.
I congratulated her on her new job, told her at least she wouldn't be so stressed anymore, and asked her how long she had at school before she officially left. She was staying till the end of term.
I was cool with all of this initially, but the more time I had to think about it, the more pissed I got. Maybe a little background info will come in handy. End of last year my brother Jason asked if I would meet up with a friend/acquaintance of his who was applying for a Maths position at my school. I said ok, we met up for coffee, I said I would put in a good word for her, whatever good that would do. I went to see my HOD, told him Irene was keen for an interview and he should consider her since she was my friend. He said he would definitely give her an interview. After the interview I asked him how she went. He wasn't very impressed, and he said her accent was a problem. She didn't get the job.
Fast forward to two weeks later, and one of the positions fell through (non-NZQA recognised qualification) so it was readvertised. Irene texted me to ask about it, I went to Oded to ask him to reconsider her. I dunno if my vote for her held any weight, but a few days later he told me she got the job. Rejoice rejoice.
Fast forward to week 2 Term 1 and we have the drama I blogged about a few posts back. Fast forward to 4 weeks later, and we have her resigning at the drop of a hat. I went to bat for her. I regret doing that because now it reflects badly on me. My HOD found out that she accepted the offer immediately after it was offered to her. She told him she had thought long and hard about her decision, but when asked when the offer was made, turns out it was made the night before. She took a day off yesterday to visit the school. Not a good look, because she still has a job to do. Then she tells me she's on the waiting list to fly back to Malaysia to see her 4 y/o son (long story - he's staying with her mum while she works here, i dunno the reasoning behind this). This morning she tells me the travel agent has a vacancy on a 9th April flight, but that's 1 and a half weeks till the end of term! She asks me if I think she should take the flight. At this point I am seriously pissed off and disappointed with her work ethic. I understand that you hate the job and the school and the students, but the least you could do is see the term out seeing as how you were supposed to see the year out! So I tell her she would have to talk to the principal if she was thinking about doing this, although I seriously discouraged it since it would be hard to find someone at such short notice, and we can't expect a reliever to take her classes for nearly two weeks. She (very grudgingly) agreed with me and decided it would look bad. !?!?!??! Ya Think???
I feel like shit for recommending her. I will never do this again.

Ah well. People are built differently, and maybe she really couldn't take what the students were dishing out. I find myself wanting to give up at work sometimes to, and letting my work slide. Don't worry too much about it....and am sure your HOD wouldn't take it too much into consideration if you've had a good track record so far. :)
